Basic rules about Codicils
If you're thinking of making a change to your Will to include a gift to Perennial, here are a few simple rules about using a Codicil to do this:
- DIY is not advisable! You should never attempt to personally make amendments to your current Will, either by crossing anything out or writing in new instructions. Any changes made this way will not be valid and may make it very difficult for your Executors to administer your Will.
- Use our Codicil form to make things clearer to your solicitor and Executors.
- Take your Codicil form to your solicitor
- When you complete the Codicil form, you need to sign and date it and have two witnesses watch you do this. They must both be present with you at the same time. We would recommend you complete it at your solicitor's if possible.
- Neither witness is allowed to benefit from your Will.
- Keep the Codicil with, but not attached to, your Will.
- Keep your Will and any Codicils in a safe place.
- Send, or give, a copy of your Will and any Codicils (You could keep it in a sealed envelope if you wish) to one of your Executors or a trusted friend and include a note to say where the originals can be found.
